On February 16, Apple announced the launch of a new service called “Edge Cache” (EdgeCache), full name is Apple Edge Cache, referred to as AEC.

The function of this service is to use the existing Internet service provider’s network and server to store data closer to the user. When the user needs to view or download the content, the data can be saved on the user’s local server for reuse across the entire service area of the provider.

As an example, you and your neighbor both streaming the same movie in a somewhat short period of time. Both users will ping the closest Apple server and latch to same content distribution network, or other content delivery services that Apple has used to you.

In short, it use existing ISP networks and servers to store data closer to users.  Apple Edge Cache pass data through an ISP server before reaching the user. With Apple edge caching service, the ISP keep the data for streamed content in the local ISP server and deliver it to you, or anyone found to download/ stream for the same ISP server, again and again without pinging the originating Apple server again.

This Apple edge cache enables faster and more reliable for content transfers. There is less internet infrastructure to pass to the user, which reduces the possibility of problems and reduces the waiting time of the user. It will benefit both the user and the Internet service provider. Large streaming media platforms such as Netflix and Amazon have already adopted similar content delivery systems.

At present, this service can be availed by Apple’s invitation. Eligible applications can be applied through the official website. The service is not currently for ordinary consumers, and there are certain requirements for companies participating in the service. The threshold for application is adjusted by Apple and download speed reaches at least 25Gbps during peak usage, and the network needs to primarily serve end users.
